The Magdalene homes -.. named after the biblical figure of the former prostitute Mary Magdalene, Jesus forgave her sins - in the 19th century in Ireland as a refuge for fallen women founded in grace. Beginning of the 20th Century took over the Catholic Church these facilities and introduced strict rules. The supervisor was under the Sisters of Charity (Sisters of Mercy), which forced the young women up to ten hours of unpaid work daily. The usually sacred Sunday was no exception. Hunger, beatings and sexual abuse led to numerous outbreaks and in the 50s and 60s also resulted in riots. Some of the ten Irish establishments were closed in the 70s, the last until 1996.
